Rain Reschedules Ocala Races

. Posted in Racing News

ZUBER, FL-  Nature has not been kind to the Florida racing world this summer, and Ocala Speedway has endured more than enough nights off due to rain or wet conditions.  So as thunderstorms and showers rumbled all around the speedway, Mike Peters and the staff at Ocala Speedway kept a positive attitude and focused on getting the track ready for racing.  Even after a late afternoon shower dampened things, those preparations continued and a large crowd showed up to watch a night of racing.

But as the heat races got underway more weather woes developed west of the track and began moving toward Zuber, and by the time the Open Wheel Modified heat races were beginning there were rumblings not far from the track.  Peters and his crew remained determined, and as rain began to fall it was announced to the crowd that racing would continue after a delay.  Unfortunately, the rain also continued, and showers persisted until almost 11PM before Peters finally gave in and postponed the night's events.  And over an hour after the lights were out and most folks had gone home, that persistent rain continued to fall.

All events scheduled for Friday, July 31st, are nor rescheduled for Friday, August 21st.  Racers are to keep their arm bands for pit admission, and fans should hold onto their ticket stubs to be readmitted on the 21st.  The program will resume on August 21st where it ended due to rain.  Because the Hobby Stock race was scheduled as a $1000 to win, 30 lap event, that field will be locked on the 21st and no new additional cars can be added.  Any additions to other divisions will be added to the tail of their respective races on the 21st.  The heat race for the Mini Stock division was completed, so the field for that feature will be set by the results from that race.

In the meantime, Ocala Speedway will be taking some time off in August for rest and to allow some general maintenance to be completed on the facilities and the track.  There will be no racing at Ocala on Friday, August 7th, or the 14th.  Racing will resume on August 21st with the make up races, and will continue on August 28th as the Late Models return to Ocala Speedway.

DARLAND STRETCHES NATIONAL WIN STREAK TO 23 YEARS WITH SUNDAY OCALA WIN

by BRP Media
Ocala, Florida…….Dave Darland added to the most impressive streak in USAC history on Sunday night at Bubba Raceway Park, as he added another AMSOIL National Sprint Car win to his list and made it 23 consecutive seasons with at least one win in a USAC National series. The Lincoln, Indiana veteran’s all-time record 54th National Sprint Car win came in flag-to-flag fashion aboard the Phillips Motorsports – Trench Shoring #71P DRC/Foxco. “My crew had to work their asses off just to get the car ready for the feature after some issues in the heat race and then gave me a great car even without having much chance to keep up with the track. We have just had some bad luck out of the gate, but tonight was a great way to rebound. It’s good to be down here while it’s snowing at home, and I can drink a beer to celebrate while it’s warm outside. And it’s good to get my first win in the state of Florida!” Darland said. Darland led at the start over polesitter Chris Windom, while Robert Ballou was the early man on the move, jumping into the top-five in just a few laps after starting tenth. A red flag on lap six brought things to a screeching halt as Brady Short flipped hard into turn three and collected Landon Simon. Neither driver was hurt. After a tangle on the ensuing restart, Ballou found himself bringing out the next caution as he slid to a stop in turn-three, giving up the fifth spot but restarting at the tail. Under that caution, defending champion and current point leader Brady Bacon… read more
